Problems upgrading to new version

When I tried to install the latest version of Phoca Gallery, I received a blank page stating that their was an error so I followed the instructions in the Installation Problem Solving - Files page.

I copied the files from the latest version's zip file to their respective locations in components/com_phocagallery, administrator/components/com_phocagallery, images/phocagallery and language and administrator language. I then went to Upload Package File and selected the com_phocagallery_ftp_install.zip file and clicked on Upload File and Install.

I received the following error:

Warning
JInstaller: :Install: Can't find Joomla XML setup file.
Error
Unable to find install package

To recover Phoca Gallery, I had to restore the previous days backup. Any suggestions?
