Jan,
If I recreate thumbnails of my pictures so that I can add a watermark, do I loose my photo descriptions under them? I noticed that if I move a subcatagory from one directory to another that I loose all discriptions. If I loose my descriptions by making new thumbnails, that will cost me weeks of work to get this done as I have thousends of pictures on my site.
So can you tell me what will happen?

Re: discription on photos
Jan,
Am iI correct if I say that the discriptions that I make to go along with the pictures are somehow linked to the small thumbnails?
In that case I could just throw away the big thumbnails and get them redone, or will it overwrite all if I throw away the big thumbnails only?
Greetings from Holland
PS: you are doing a great job!!!

Re: discription on photos
Jan,
Got some good news for all people that have discriptions with their photos and did not have a watermark on their pictures. just add the watermark-large.png file in the directory, throw away your large thumbnails and recreate the thumbnails. The text is linked to the small thumbnaiols as I suspected. You must however not add a watermark-small.png and throw away your small thumbnails otherwise you will throw away your discriptions and the photos will be reorganised in alphabetical order as well.
So once again, it has been tested on a live site and if you only throw away your thumbnails large it will work like a charm.

Re: discription on photos
Hi,
to everyone: the descriptions are stored in the database, so if you remove pictures from the backend of phocagallery, then the database rows are deleted and you lose your descriptions.
If you delete the thumbnails on your server, and let Phoca recreate the thumbs then all descriptions are saved. (so you can delete the whole thumbs folder and phoca will recreate thumbs, and the descriptions are still there).
Regards, Carolien

Hi,
what procedure do you use to move the pictures? What do you do when you delete the small thumbnails?

Carolien,
What I do is in the catagory selection I reasign the Photobook to a different Parent Item. If I do that I loose all discriptions
The way I remove my thumbnails is via my ftp server. then I just delete the thumbs
Regards
Ben

Re: discription on photos
So you go to components > phoca gallery > images, select an image, press edit, then change the category, press save. If you open the item again the description (which was in the 'description' field) is suddenly gone?gilsingb wrote:What I do is in the catagory selection I reasign the Photobook to a different Parent Item. So, you added the images in the backend, added a description with each image, and later you decided you wanted to recreate the thumbs (because of size for example), thus deleted the thumbs via FTP in images/phocagallery/yourfolder/thumbs. Then you went to the backend, opened an image there and the description was gone? The way I remove my thumbnails is via my ftp server. then I just delete the thumbs
This shouldn't happen.

The reason I do only the Large images thumbs and not all is the order in which the images are placed. If I delete them all (which I have done previously) I not only lost the order in which the photos were placed but also the descriptionsSo, you added the images in the backend, added a description with each image, and later you decided you wanted to recreate the thumbs (because of size for example), thus deleted the thumbs via FTP in images/phocagallery/yourfolder/thumbs. Re: discription on photos
Hi,
What are the exact steps you perform when you move your 'photobook' (Could you try to use Phocagallery terms like category and subcategory, when you're talking about the backend of Phocagallery. If you use folder I assume you're talking about some folder/directory on the server. I assume that 'photobook' is a category, or am I wrong)?
When I move a category to another category I do the following:
go to components > phoca gallery > categories, select the category I want to move and press edit, then select a different parent category and press save.
Now my category is moved and all the descriptions are still there.
I can think of only 1 possibility with moving pictures and losing descriptions. This is when you move a subfolder on the server and use multiple add to update the parent category.
I moved once some folders on my server. Then I went to each image in the backend of phoca and set the file again. (or edited the table directly via PHPmyAdmin).
With my thumbnails I do the following:
I always backup without the thumbsfolders (saving me about 10MB's in my backup file). When I restore my site locally I just let Phoca recreate the thumbs. It has no consequence for the descriptions or the ordering whatsoever.
