Main Category Image - Want to use an image other than avatar

I'm trying to add an image to represent a MAIN category. This category has no images, but multiple folders/categories underneath. I understand how to add an image for a folder that has images (in options - what used to be called parameters), but I don't understand how to add an image to a category with no images (only subcategories) inside of it.

Example:

Networking - no images
--September 2013 After Hours
--August 2012 Early Morning

Hi, this is a problem, you need to disable the "special" value in representing image parameter - "special" parameter saves the loading of items, other parameters can search through whole tree of categories and subcategories - so if you set e.g. ordering by ID, the system will try to find it in category, if there is no image, then it will try to search subcategory.
