Hey experts, I'm going to roll two questions into this post.
Firstly, I was wondering, when displaying subcategories in the category view, is it possible for these categories to be represented by thumbnails instead of the folder icon?
For example, if my layout was something like:
Root/Category1/Subcategory1
Could I be browsing Category1 while Subcategory1 is represented by a thumbnail image from Subcategory1?
I know that if Subcategory1 contained another subcategory, this would be difficult, but is it possible to do if Subcategory1 didn't contain any additional subcategories?
PART 2
There's the nifty "Hide Categories" parameter that works for hiding specific categories. What I'd like to know is: if I hide a category that has children, can the children automatically be hidden as well?
Using the example folder structure from above, if I hid Category1, could that recursively hide Subcategory1 and any other subcategories within Category1? This seems like it would be built in, but I might be wrong.
Thanks for your help!
Peter

Re: Subcategory Thumbnails and Hiding Category Tree Branches
For the first part of your question:
So basically, what you're saying is you don't want the sub-category list to appear separate from the thumbnails in the category?
Otherwise, there is a way to display the sub-category in the parameter settings - "Small with Shadow/ Medium with Shadow" options that will automatically pull a thumbnail image from the subcategory to use as a picture.
Part 2:
Try it and see - I believe the sub-categories would be hidden as well, because the main category can't be accessed. You would have to make sure you hide sub-categories in the parameter settings in Categories View.

Re: Subcategory Thumbnails and Hiding Category Tree Branches
GenkaiNashi,
Thanks for your input.
I found what was wrong with displaying thumbnails instead of the folder icon... pretty stupid of me, but the setting in the parameters section is clearly labeled: "Display image instead of folder icon", and when set to "No" creates the problem that I was having.
Hiding subcategories in Category view worked for excluding subcategories of hidden parents. So that much worked!
