Problem with installing extensions (JFolder error)

A few days ago I installed Joomla! on my server and today I tried to install Phoca gallery component (com_phocagallery_v2.6.2.zip) and Joomla! gave me the following error.

JFolder::files: Path does not point to a valid folder or the folder has been deleted.
JFolder::folder: Path does not point to a valid folder or the folder has been deleted.
JFolder::files: Path does not point to a valid folder or the folder has been deleted.
Error! Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package.

Google and other forums told me that this has something to do with the general settings of the server. It would be cool to know which setting needs to be changed for this because every other CMS is working fine on my VPS.

I saw that some other people had similar issues but didn't solve them or the problems where to different to adapt them to my server. I am pretty new to all this server stuff and Joomla itself, so hopefully there is someone who can provide some little help or tips how to start and solve this problem.

After turning off FTP in the global configuration in Joomla! I am getting this error when uploading the extension

Problem solved, forgot to set the permissions on all the folders which you can see under System Info
