error creating thumbnails...

first of all, superb product!
I know that there are a number of threads relating to this topic. Havng read through a number of them I cannot see a solution to my problem.
I too get an error when attempting to create thumbnails.
I'm not sure why. whilst there is a large number of files i wish to upload into a category i have deliberately only tried a couple to start with to see if it is a memory issue. I have 96MB of PHP memory available.
GD lib is enabled.
files are 800*600 and about 140kb each.
folder has 755 and files 644 like the other categories already working fine.

I am running it on 12MB (50MB will increase the script before thumbnail creating), so I think 96MB should be enough, the resolution is small too. there should not be any problem with such resolution, maybe try to see the permissions and ownership, see:
