Can't add to new subcategory - can't even choose one!

I am using Phoca Gallery for a website for teachers of the German language.

I just created a new subcategory within an existing category and now when I try to add pictures to it, I cannot even get to the subcategories of this the category. I used to be able to do this (there were 5 previous subcategories that I could upload to) and still can with another category - I can choose the subcategories in this other one just fine.

Any ideas what could have happened and how it can be fixed? I am really hoping that I do not have to delete everything in this category and start over as there are lots of pictures that I have already titled, etc.
