Where does this css style come from?

first of all: That is a nice gallery.

Second: I have a problem finding the style which is responsible for the white frame/background in the category file for the icons (see pic).

Hi,

in the settings of phocagallery (components > phoca gallery > control panel > parameters) you need to set the backgroundcolor to 'transparant'.

Check in the menu item if it's used (menus > your menu > your phocagallery menu item > parameters - component)
