Any chance to get one day a light version of Phoca Gallery?

Post by dotcom22 »

Hello Jan

Your component is the best gallery for Joomla 1.5...everybody know that....Well coded, well supported, lot of features and free...Thanks again for this stuff

Anyway for who (like me) want install a simple gallery for some customers your component is little bit complex...Sometime people want just ability to get a photo gallery where only one person manage that and no more....All other simple gallery for Joomla 1.5 are not well developed/supported...and often contain many bug, are not SEF compatible and more...

Here some suggestions:

Remove all features not really useful for a simple gallery like:

- Geotagging
- Theme (just keep a simple and standard theme matching current joomla template)
- User rights (every body can see gallery...that mean always a public gallery)
- VirtueMart stuff
- Video Code youtube stuff
- Rating stuff
- Comment stuff
- Piclens stuff

Also make more simpler all parameter settings buy taking off:

- Virtuemart Setting
- Piclens Setting
- Overlib Setting
- Rating Setting
- Comment Setting
- Watermark Setting
- Information Settings (exif)
- Geotagging Settings
- Switch (swap) Image Settings

And finally making the process of adding image more intuitive...that mean select a image file and a category, fill a optional description if need and upload...no more...Same with creating category....just choose a name, ability to add a image and description and no more...

In practice this is a kind of downgrade...I thinks it can be nice to get that kind of component...just simple stuff...where you don't need to worry to add new features...For sure this would say you must maintain 2 version instead only one
but this light version can be very stable for many time...just taking care to make some possible security update and no more....Who need more feature can use the "full phoca gallery"...All this downgrade contribute to have also a more simple and intuitive backend admin...WHen user get only few features like create category and adding images is impossible to be lost...

what do you think Jan ???

Any other people think this can be useful...or I am the only one wanted simple gallery ??

thanks

Hi,

it's just an idea and I tested this slightly, like 1 minute or so - so do more thorough testing.

It's not removing any features, but it 'hides' some of the parameters in the parameter section.

What you do: go to administrator/components/com_phocagallery/config.xml
Open this file in an editor like Notepad++ (for windows).
Remove all options you don't need.

If I'm correct only the other options appear.

Furthermore, learn your clients to create folders on the harddisk, and let them create categories with multiple add. It's an easy way and they don't see all the difficult settings (like access settings and geotagging settings)

By the way: the quickstart guide is based on plainly adding images.

Regards, Carolien
