If I'm not mistaken, the user control panel will allow users to create their own categories.
I have created a menu item pointing to the user control panel layout, but when it's selected I get a message saying "you are currently logged into the private area" and a button to logout. If I log out and then back in, I still get the same thing.
What am I missing?

Re: User Control Panel
hi, maybe you mean the message from Joomla! login, after you login into the Joomla! then Joomla! will say you that you are logged in, then you should click on the cp link... the problem of login is it doesn't go back where are you comming from in Joomla! so the main site of login will be displayed after login ...

Re: User Control Panel
Actually, it seems that there is a problem relating to the fact that I am logged in to the administrator as well as the site itself.
I have been able to to get to the screen which prompted me to create a gallery. When I did, and then later returned it won't let me do anything beyond edit the gallery that I created.
I also just noted that earlier in my "joomla" career I installed CB and it looks like Joomla is using the cb login. Since I'm not using cd at all, should I uninstall that? Could that be part of my problem?

Re: User Control Panel
in frontend users are able to do only one category, so if the do it, they can only delete it or edit their name, they can upload, delete, publish and unpublish the images (in category view)
