Need help on parameters

Hello, all
Sorry if this info is already present but can't make it work myself or find the info.
I have a number of parent categories and a number of categories in aech parent category, i want only parent ones to be displayed on main page and when you click on it you receive all categories to which it is parent like:
on main page you see category animals, if you cliuck you receive:
-cats
-dogs
....
right now for it is like
animals>>cats
animals>>dogs
...
on main page
so it a very large list on main page and difficult to read...
