Achieving specific layout & gallery plugin

Hi
I have attached an image of the layout I would like to have using a switchimage/category embedded in an article. I can get the two pieces to appear in the article, but I cannot solve how they interact to switch out the large image. I also don't know if it's possible to have the description the way I want.
I tried copying the code from the gallery plugin demo, but it gives an error when displayed. I replaced all the brackets to make sure that was not the problem, but it did not solve the error.
Here are the versions I am using:
Joomla 1.5.15
Phoca Gallery Component 2.6.1
plg_content_phocagallery_2.5.9
plg_content_phocagallery_slideshow_v2.6.0
plg_editors-xtd_phocagallery_v2.6.0
Can someone please show me specific code examples to help me create the layout in the attached image?
