How to avoid this space around the image
making the bottom bar stick out from the picture?

I would like it to look like in the v. 4.5 demo gallery:

There's a light frame around your images in the category view, which is probably made by your template. It should be removable via css.

Edit: Ok, now I see your settings screenshot. Unpublish theme_simple.

Ok. it's template override.
Hard to avoid this.
