How to manage PDFs?

I absolutely LOVE phoca - the ability to manage and display images like this is wonderful.
We have several departments where clerks scan documents into PDF files, and for our current (ugly!) web site, I wrote a little program that the scanner software runs automatically, and lets them choose the area (Agendas, Minutes, Financials, etc.) where the document will go, and give it a name, and then uploads the document via FTP to the appropriate directory. This works well, but users of the web site only see an index of files... (ugly!)
If phoca would treat PDFs in the same way it does "regular" images, it seems that we might be able to use the facility to add captions, descriptions and all the other great features.
I've searched the doc and forum messages, and what I see is the ability to create PDFs, but we're already creating them. What about storing and displaying them, like they were "images" (they are, sort of) or is this a bad idea that needs to be addressed some other way?
