Can't make thumnails/display pictures.

Hi, thank yo for this cool extension. I would love to use it on my new site (just learned all this stuff lol) but I'm wondering if there is something missing with my home server (just got Hardy Heron linux server working) because I get this error when I try to add images: The GD function ImageCreateFromJPEG doesn't work on your server. Because the files are local, the picture I'm trying to show with phocagallery 'live' on here in 'images/phocagallery/pictures... I made sure all the permissions were ok, . I even checked using joomla media manager that they are in there (they are jpg.s too, and have the correct file name format.). I can only see one picture in the 'category' in phocagallery, though three pictures should be in the folder I created there (the 'pictures' folder after /phocagallery). Also, I installed the Phoca Random Image extension, on my frontpage, and it displays the extension , but not the actual picture- blank, and shows the picture name 'clown', also, only that one picture, not the other two in the phoca image gallery folder. even when I refresh.
