SEF Urls

Hi
I read the manual, and entered every category into the menu. The menu links look great. Each category linked from the menu is fine.
The general view of all categories spawns completely different links.
Eg - from menu /photos/art-architecture
from categories view - /category/3-art-architecture
also, I have it set to no popups. and the detail urls' are worse. No breadcrumbs at all.
I have sh404sef installed and purged all the phocagallery links to rest them.
The detail view comes out like /4-canines/detail/2254-must-finish-the-tin. Even if followed from the menu link.
I am so stumped
