Is there a way to enable the slideshow so that:

1.) It doesn't start or advance automatically, but just displays the first slide when the page loads

2.) The user can control the advance of the slides with the usual play/stop controls?

I noticed a plugin for com_phocagallery_icons_grey, which seems to have the controls I need, but I find that any attempt to install that plug in Joomla! 3.5 fails to work.

Hi, which slideshow you exactly mean, there are differnt slideshow used in Phoca Gallery?

If you mean the basic, displayed in detail window - such does not start automatically, user needs to click play button and it has standard play and stop buttons
