Upgrade problems with Picasa

After upgrading a site from J2.5 to J3.4, which also involved upgrading Phoca Gallery from 3.2.8 to 4.2.1, I was left with several phoca categories which would not display properly. I was using a PhocaGallery menu item - List of images, Category view. Several categories displayed just an empty frame, no image, and it was impossible to click to go into that category.
I tried changing the option to show just a generic folder image, instead of one of the thumbnails. I tried recreating thumbnails. No luck. Eventually I figured out that the problem categories were all ones which had contained images imported from Picasa. Re-importing those images from Picasa solved the problem of the categories not displaying properly. But ...
Those categories previously contained other images (not from Picasa, uploaded directly by users). Importing from Picasa always wipes out Phoca Gallery's knowledge of any other photos in the category. So I then had to re-import those images too. Now I had all the images back again.
The only thing which was missing, and which I don't think there is a way to re-create, is the user information about which user had uploaded which photos.
Even if I knew which users had uploaded which photos, I don't think there is a way to insert this information afterwards. Is this true?

Hi, yes, unfortunately, this is the import function (not synchronize function) so by every import all old data will be removed - the images are not on your server, they are still on Picasa server, so all the information should be maintained there.

So yes, it is not recommended to have a category with server images and Picasa images :-(

Thanks for the clarification Jan, and the recommendation. I can see that it makes lots of sense to keep Picasa images in separate categories, and I shall try to implement that. :|
