Bybass settings

Is there a way to bybass the settings for styling as I'd rather just do it through the css as I can't seem to remove the background colour ect.
It's all coded in the php. I think a css overrides the settings if you know all tags. (I'm not sure about that though)
You can also create a 'template override' by copying the php (and all folders above) to your template folder/html
