Large image frame appearing above subfolders

Hi Jan, first of all my sincere compliments for a great software creation! I am a total newbie in creating websites, so I am sweating it and I apologize in advance for stupid questions...
I set up a gallery as follows:
Albums - Ecuador
Albums - Ecuador - coast
Albums - Ecuador - .........
Albums - Mexico - birds
Albums - Mexico - birds - great egret
etc. etc.
Now when I look at the preview there is a large image above the icons of the sub folders (coast, great egret, etc.) on every page and I can't make it go away. I have no idea what I did that it got there. And no idea how to get rid of it... What I want to accomplish is just that each page shows folders/subfolders of each category (no birds in my Ecuador gallery for example) and, instead of when opening the subfolders containing the images seeing a big image and the thumbnails underneath, I just would like to show the thumbnails only, so that people can click on each one in particular to see the large size picture. How can I accomplish this, or would I have to delete all I have got so far (images, folders, categories) and start from zilch? In that case, would I have to uninstall Phoca and then reinstall it, or how would it have to be done properly?
Ah, and another question that I found out just now: I have some square and portrait images, but they show up as landscape (cropped at the top and bottom). How can I change that?
Sorry about all these questions and my ignorance. It's all a steep learning curve for me...
Please let me know if my question was not clear enough... And thanks again for such a great product and for all your work!
