Large image frame appearing above subfolders

Hi Jan, first of all my sincere compliments for a great software creation! I am a total newbie in creating websites, so I am sweating it and I apologize in advance for stupid questions... I set up a gallery as follows:

Albums - Ecuador
Albums - Ecuador - coast
Albums - Ecuador - .........
Albums - Mexico - birds
Albums - Mexico - birds - great egret
etc. etc.

Now when I look at the preview there is a large image above the icons of the sub folders (coast, great egret, etc.) on every page and I can't make it go away. I have no idea what I did that it got there. And no idea how to get rid of it... What I want to accomplish is just that each page shows folders/subfolders of each category (no birds in my Ecuador gallery for example) and, instead of when opening the subfolders containing the images seeing a big image and the thumbnails underneath, I just would like to show the thumbnails only, so that people can click on each one in particular to see the large size picture. How can I accomplish this, or would I have to delete all I have got so far (images, folders, categories) and start from zilch? In that case, would I have to uninstall Phoca and then reinstall it, or how would it have to be done properly?

Ah, and another question that I found out just now: I have some square and portrait images, but they show up as landscape (cropped at the top and bottom). How can I change that?

Sorry about all these questions and my ignorance. It's all a steep learning curve for me... :)

Please let me know if my question was not clear enough... And thanks again for such a great product and for all your work!

This is called switch image. Go to Phocagallery >> control panel >> parameters and disable the switch image parameter

You can set to crop the medium and small thumbnails into the sizes entered in the PhocaGallery parameters. (This is on by default). I guess your sizes has been changed and the width and the height aren't the same anymore. You can turn this cropping off in the phocagallery parameters (same parameters as above). If it's off, it should resize the image while keeping the existing forms.
