Hi,
you could create a different category with other medium sizes. In this category only images for articles are present.
To do different sizes for one category, you can create the category. Then set different sizes in the PhocaGallery parameters. Then add the images you want to use in the articles to that category. Phoca Gallery will create thumbnails with the sizes you have set. Then you set the sizes in the Phoca Gallery parameters back to the originals, so you don't have any problems when you add new pictures to your gallery.
In the articles you'll only use pictures from that category.
I hope it's clear, and you'll have to test a bit I think.
