Update from Joomla 2.5.24 / PG 3.2.8 to J 3.3.3 / PG 4.1.1

In process of updating a site from 2.5x Joomla to 3x series
I updated Phoca Gallery from 3.1.5 to 3.2.8 on Joomla 2.5.24 site. Will that run on 3.3.3? If better to run Phoca Gallery 4.1.1 on Joomla 3.3.3, should I do that AFTER update of Joomla to 3.3.3 or is 4.1.1 back compatible with 2.5.24, ie OK to update to 4.1.1 prior to updating Joomla?
