Having Categories owned by a single user is not very flexible. If I wanted only one user to be able to create sub-categories or upload pictures to those sub-categories, I could have the site admin do it.

What I would like (and I suspect others would) is to allow people that are authorized to create content on the site (e.g. authors, publishers, etc.) to create categories any place in the tree, and upload images into them.

This seems like it would be pretty basic, but I can't figure out how to do that with the current security model. I know Joomla 1.6 will have a lot more flexibility with respect to group rights, but this could be implemented even in 1.5 using the current pre-defined groups. Having to name individual category owners, and only allowing a choice between all registered users or named users is pretty limiting.

I 'believe' I am looking for the same thing as cleggcj, so I am going to hopefully explain it.

I have installed Phoca Gallery. (GREAT COMPONENT! I sent a little bit of $$ via paypal to you Jan! :) ) I want the website to be 'self-sufficient' and run without a lot of input from me. So I am very happy that users can upload their own pictures without my approval. What I don't want is to have a lot of Categories appear when I first go to the Main Photo Album Page (index.php?option=com_phocagallery&view=categories). So, as the admin, I would like to create a few CORE categories. One is Fish, One is Chickens, and one is Cows. Now, under Fish, I have added a few more subcategories, red fish, and blue fish.

So now it looks like this:

Fish (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
- Blue (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
- Red (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
Chickens (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
Cows (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))

User12 has some pictures of GREEN fish. So as the admin, I hope that he is able to quickly grasp the hierarchy and do the following:

Fish (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
- Blue (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
- Green (((created by User12 - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
- Red (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
Chickens (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
Cows (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))

Which is different than what I currently am able to figure out right now of:

Fish (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
- Blue (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
- Red (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
Chickens (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
Cows (((created by admin - but anybody can upload and further sub-categorize)))
Green (((created by User12 - And he / she is the only person that has rights)))

So I am not sure if this is already possible. I have read the "Upload images in category view" (https://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-g ... ser-upload) and am not sure how to do this.

If not, then maybe it is a feature request, maybe there could be a few more options under the "Upload images in category view" e.g. "Create subcategories" and possibly adding the following to the selection of:

Delete and Publish User Rights
- Nobody -
- All Registered Users -
- OWN SUBMISSIONS -

Which would prevent users from deleting other's photos / videos , but allow them to delete their own.

Regardless - Great product!

I think this might be a feature request, so I am putting it there per the instructions for feature requests.

Yep, my problem is similar to this thread so I'll just add my +1 vote. (although I think there are a couple of variations).

IMO, in many cases (probably most), users shouldn't even be allowed to create their own categories. For my needs at least (and I'd think this would be common), I would like to have some categories that are open for all registered users, not for a particular user. Then I'd like for the users to be able to choose a category from a list of categories (pre-selected by the administrator) when they post.

Example: I am now doing a site for cat lovers who like to share their photos. There will be several different galleries for things like "Siamese Cats", "happy cats", "fat cats", "bad cats"... you know, use your imagination! What I call a separate "gallery" is really a category, and I will have menu links to the various categories (galleries). It would be nice to have a simple link on all pages that says "share your photo". Ideally, when clicking that link the user would have only a simple option to upload a photo, a title, maybe description, and a choice of allowed categories. All registered users should have the same choice of categories.

My problem also same as unleash. I want user to upload images to cats that are already predetermined list of categories by admin... That would give the admin more control over how the website looks and number of categories.

Hi, you can create the categories for the users in admin, you can set that users cannot create a subcategory, so they are only able to upload images to one category (e.g. main category which was created in admin and the owner was added to some user)

Hi, there are two ways how to upload images in frontend:

1) in UCP - every user has own category and can create subcategories in this category (he/she can create main category too)
2) in Category view - every user who have rights to upload images to the category, he/she can upload it there (they need not to be owners of the category)

If userA has images of Angelina Jolie and userB has images of Amy Adams and they both want to upload their images to the category "Actresses", how can they do it?

Remember that Angelina Jolie images need to go in a subcategory named as "Angelina Jolie" and Amy Adams pics need to go into subcategory named as "Amy Adams"
So you can use the 2) - you will create categories - Actors, and subcategories Actor A, Actor B and set rights for these categores for different users so they then can upload images to these categories in Category view.

Hi Jan, yes I've learned this from another post. I understand that #2 is a possible solution to what I and some of the others are trying to do. But I don't think it's user friendly or obvious to the user to have to first go into a category in order to post. It would be much nicer to just have a link that's always available like: "add your photo".

Hopefully you don't see this as a complaint, just a point of clarification. You certainly can't do all things to everyone. Thank you for your great work. Phocagallery works beautifully in many situations. Just not for as it is for user uploading, at least for my needs (although I am going to try and hack a solution). Thanks!
