Hi, large thumbnails are used as the full images. See similar posts in this forum. There are many reasons for this - to safe traffic (displaying e.g. 3MB image in detail will be nonsense), to have the same size and format, etc.
Of course you can customize the gallery, so you can display original images in detail (e.g. in Highslide Options you can set it) but it is of course not recommended as originals are mostly not optimized, have different size, format, etc.
Large thumbnails (you can set size you need, e.g. the same size like original have) is here to optimize the output of your site and to standardize, to make one unique format, to safe memory, traffic, CPU, etc. This is the main feature of thumbnails.
