Did you check the folder permissions? And did you link a map to the new categories in which the pictures should be uploaded?

I found the cause of the problem. I had made a change in the core permissions in joomla - that is why it worked only with superuser.
Unfortunately, I had to rebuild the site from an earlier version - but it is ok now. Besides the help posted here, I would also like to thank the people at OSTraining.com - I belong to their group and they even went in to the back end of my site and gave me advice.
Thanks to all - Phoca working fine now.

Hello,
could you please be more specific on that! I'm having the same problem and it's getting me nuts
I can't upload images not even as a Super User!

Yes,
1.) Upgrade your Joomla! to v.3.4.4
2.) Check frontend upload again. If it still does not work, see picture below.
