I have a lot of test sites (mostly low cost servers), I have enabled ftp layer and didn't solve such problems anywhereis that a thing that Jan knows?
Thumbnails are created by GD library which is a part of php on the server so there should be some rights to write new thumbnails on the server disc... so if the FTP enabled layer don't help, then permissions and ownership on server need to be changed ...
