can't get categories to work

Hello I have one main category at LEVEL 1 and a few subcategories at LEVEL 2 and so on up to level 4

Now at the menu item page I want to display level 2 subcategories that's why I set ID parameter in menu item settings to 1
However when I do it, I get a blank Page
When I leave ID field empty by default, the phoca shows random level 3 subcategories instead of level 2.

How to solve this problem?

Hi, blank page mostly means a php error? But which type of blank page do you get, can you paste a screenshot? (it can be a php error or empty results)
